The Computer Ladies

Celebrating 12 Years in Business

Barbara

Barbara Yoder is an Iowa City native, graduating from Iowa City City High School and the University of Iowa.   A trained educator, she began working on computers in 1969, in the Dept. of Pediatrics, helping a resident with research.

For more than 25 years Barbara worked at Child Health Specialty Clinics (CHSC), on research projects and patient data on mainframe computers.  With a meticulous eye for detail, she assisted the evolution from mainframe and typewriter to personal computer for data management and report production.

While doing that, she was a volunteer church secretary for 15 years using the personal computer as an invaluable tool.  It was at CHSC that she and Mary met in 1993.

Mary

Mary Noth arrived in Iowa City in 1970 to pursue a graduate degree in computer science and became a permanent Iowa City resident.

After staying home with her 3 children for a few years, she got back into the work force as a church secretary, having used the new personal computers for PTO minutes and Camp Fire group newsletters.

She went on to become a visiting instructor at the School of Social Work and managed the North Hall Instructional Technology Center.

In 1993 she was hired by the Child Health Specialty Clinics to provide personal computer support and training and to be their network administrator.

Having become best friends at CHSC, Barbara and Mary left there together in March, 1996, to form emPower Computing Services.  It wasn't long after that that customers would greet them saying, "the Computer Ladies are here!"  Now that has become who they are.

After 12 years of serving customers, the favorite aspect of their business is helping people.  The wonderful people they meet keep the job fun and interesting.
